Writing process

Everyone has a different writing process, and some try out a few to see what works for them. Mine is completely sporadic and probably doesn’t make sense to anyone. I don’t outline, or even think about how many words I want my novel to be. I brainstorm with my beta on everything from names, ages, and looks, to the plot. Yvette, said beta and best friend, is a master and pointing out the holes and potential conflicts. After a few hours of brainstorming, which is done entirely on email, I set out the first two or three chapters and get to work.

I write mostly at night, from 9-11, and because of my kids’ schedules with sports I carry my laptop everywhere, especially to games or practices. I’ve been known to pound out a few thousand words with ten basketballs dribbling behind me. I don’t always need noise as it can be distracting, but the silence is never fun either. The one thing I can’t have on when I’m writing is the television. It distracts me. I stopped watching TV when I wrote FOREVER MY GIRL so I could focus on the story, so now when the TV is on, I find myself wanting to watch it. And since we have Netflix I’m finding more and more reasons to watch TV and not right.

If I can get away with it, I’ll write during the day. It’s definitely my preferred time, but not always feasible with my job. Lately, I’ve been saving the weekends for family time, but that’s all about to change and I’ll go back to spending full-days writing.

Something that I find odd is that I have a beautiful office with two skylights and six floor to ceiling windows, yet I prefer to write in the kitchen sitting in an uncomfortable chair at the island. I do think this drives my husband nuts, especially when I have to charge my laptop.

Everyone has to find a process that works for him or her. Mine seems a bit unconventional, but it’s functioning. I do look forward to the days when I’m writing during the day and not whacking my head against the computer from falling asleep ßthat is a process that I don’t recommend.
